چکیده

This article presents a new method for determining optimal transit routes. The Transit Route Arc-Node Service Maximization model is a mathematical model that maximizes the service value of a route, rather than minimizing cost. Cost (distance) is considered as a budget constraint on the extent of the route. The mathematical formulation modifies and exploits the structure of linear programming problems designed for the traveling salesman problem. An innovative divide-and-conquer solution procedure is presented that not only makes the transit routing problem tractable, but also provides a range of high-quality alternate routes for consideration, some of which have substantially varying geometries. Variant formulations are provided for several common transit route types. The model is tested through its application to an existing street network in Richardson, TX. Optimal numeric results are obtained for several problem instances, and these results demonstrate that increased route cost is not correlated with increased service

Transit Network Optimization – Minimizing Transfers and Optimizing Route Directness

This paper presents a mathematical methodology for transit route network optimization. The goal is to provide an effective computational tool for the optimization of large-scale transit route networks. The objectives are to minimize transfers and optimize route directness while maximizing service coverage. The formulation of the methodology consists of three parts: (1) representation of transit...

Time-varying shortest path problems with constraints

The shortest path problem is considered with yet another extension. The transit times b(x,y,u) and the arc costs c(x,y,u) on arc (x,y) vary as a function of the departure time u at the beginning vertex of the arc. The problem considered is to find the shortest path between a pair of nodes such that the total traverse time is lesser than some specified value T. Waiting times at nodes are conside...
